Wow! A Wiper Card!

How To Make a Wiper Card to Wow Your Friends

This card kicks up a Double Z-Fold card another notch. When stretching the card to make it open, it also activates a mechanism where an arm, like a windshield wiper, pops up an image or sentiment! Pretty cool, right? So let’s see how it’s done.

Wiper card base pieces

Start with two pieces of Misty Moonlight card stock cut at 4 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ and 2 1/4″ x 8 1/2″. Both get scored at 1 1/2″ and 3″.

Wiper card base construction

This is how the pieces will eventually fit together.

Let’s Put It All Together!

Add your Designer Series Paper (DSP) of choice to each panel, measuring 1/4″ smaller on each side to leave a small margin in each. Add any other images, being sure they will not interfere with the wiper. Cut a piece of card stock to 1 3/8″ x 2 1/8″. You will want it to match your card base color so that it is less visible. In the photos below, I am showing this with a white piece just so that it is easier to see.

Fold up the bottom right corner to create a triangle, then crease firmly. Flip the 2 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ band over and line up the small folded piece to the back. Align (don’t glue yet!) the right side, when unfolded, just to the left of the first score line on the right, then fold up the triangle as seen below. This triangle is where you will attach glue dots and fold it back down to adhere to your card stock.

Now, fold down the longer part of that small folded piece so that it is now vertical, but doesn’t extend beyond the bottom edge of the band. If it does, then trim it now. Next, cut a strip of window sheet acetate, about 1/2″ x 2″.

Window sheet strip attachment

Attach one end horizontally to the small folded piece with glue dots, as seen here.

Image added to window sheet

Put glue dots on the other end of the window sheet and attach your wiper image, face up.

Completed wiper card

Using Stampin’ Seal, attach the band onto your card base as seen here, and finish decorating your card front.

Here is how the card looks both open and closed.
