Using Stampin’ Up! Water Painters

Create colorful backgrounds with these new tools.

The new Stampin’ Up! Water Painters are so easy to use when you want to create colorful backgrounds to your cards. The three different sizes of brush tips give you many options. The small and medium sized brushes are round and have pointy tips that allow you to do very detailed coloring. Give a little more pressure as you paint to give a washed look to small areas of your cards. Just fill the tubes with water and you are ready to paint! Tap your ink pad on a lucite block and use this as your pallet with your Water Painters. Squeeze the painter until you get the desired amount of water to mix with your ink on the block and then paint away!

Be sure to use either Fluid 100 Watercolor paper or Shimmery White card stock. These papers are better able to handle the extra wetness and make it easier to disperse the ink around. I used Shimmery White on all the cards seen here.

The largest brush is my favorite!

This brush is wider and flatter than the others and has a straight edge rather than a pointy tip. This provides opportunities for more coverage of larger areas or wider lines as in the cards below.

Below, the wide brush is used to make the blue striped background. Notice the look of texture you can get when you use a slightly dryer brush. I love the effect of seeing the brush strokes and the shade variation.

Try all three brushes to create a patterned background. Watercoloring doesn’t have to be soft and subtle. Why not use some bold colors as seen with this pattern seen below? The Daisy was also colored with the Water Painter. The bottom daisy layer was punched from watercolored Shimmery White card stock, and the top layer was punched before coloring. Colors were then added with the Water Painter to get the Daffodil Delight center and Magenta Madness petals. Shading can be done with varying amounts of water. More water for a lighter, washed look, and a dryer brush for deeper shades and more detail.
